MISSION: Breast Cancer Awareness: Beautiful Pink Scarf
Secret Agent L is so honored by her Affiliated Agents’ selfless, creative, and thoughtful acts of kindness, especially during this, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Affiliated Agent D of Oregon never fails to bring a huge smile to Secret Agent L’s face and, I’m sure, the faces of all the readers and finders-of-her-treats. Affiliated Agent D, we are blessed to have you in this world!
Date: Wednesday, 14 October 2009
Location: Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Corvallis, Oregon
Time: Agent did not specify
Affiliated Agent D states: “Well, I FINALLY got this mission completed!! A few weeks back I ordered an adorable crochet scarf pattern off of etsy (I’m addicted!). I made it up in the softest pink yarn I could find…for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Today hubby had an appointment for a CT scan at the hospital. I decided that would be the perfect place to leave it, so when we left, it stayed behind in the Nuclear Medicine waiting room
Hopefully it brightened someone’s day!!”

MISSION: Expressions of Hope: Allegheny General Hospital
Are you ready for this? THIS is THE MISSION that Number Two and I did (yes, Secret Agent L will be speaking in first-person for this post, because it’s really important to her) on Saturday at Allegheny General Hospital’s Expressions of Hope Cancer Awareness Expo. Needless to say, we were both moved. To tears. Literally. As in, leaking eyeballs.
Date: Saturday, 10 October 2009
Time: between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
Location: Allegheny General Hospital, North Side, Pittsburgh, PA
The artwork was so, so incredible. To think of what these cancer patients have been through, and then to create through art their experience so that others would have a glimpse into that world inspired us with awe, humility, and a deep sense of reverence. The human condition is truly, truly amazing, and we both felt honored to be let in to such private moments for these courageous individuals.
There were different colored markers sitting under the chair, and everyone who came through the exhibit was encouraged to leave something on the Inspiration Chair, especially if they’d been touched in any way by cancer.
While some of the artwork portrayed anguish and suffering, others portrayed a sense of hope or joy. This piece spoke to me.
And other pieces were so striking that you couldn’t help but feel as though you were right there with the patient, truly experiencing their vulnerability…and their courage.
And now on to the fun stuff! The mission itself!
Number Two and I came armed with bags of goodies to leave all over the hospital. And we didn’t look out of place at all, because as soon as we arrived at the exhibit, we were handed reusable shopping bags for all of the materials we would pick up at each of the informational stations. Nobody was the wiser that our bags were filled with treats and surprises to leave behind!
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, everything was pink and/or comforting for the recipient.
Another great item we left behind as surprises are these inspirational window cards from Compendium. Their HOPE line of products is specifically geared towards cancer patients, and these HOPE window cards carry a lot of, well, hope in them!
This painting (yes! painting!) spoke to me so deeply. There is something so serene about this woman’s face: her eyes closed, perhaps as she prays or meditates; her hairless head still so beautiful; her head titled upwards, as if towards light, towards hope, towards healing. I could not take my eyes away from this piece.
It is my hope that this mission will inspire all of you to do whatever you can to bring joy and peace to those suffering from cancer, to raise more awareness, to donate your time and financial resources, and to always believe in the power of hope.
This was, without a doubt, my favorite mission yet. For all those we have loved and lost to cancer, for all those we love now who suffer from and continue to fight against this disease, and for all those who will, someday, be affected by its touch–this mission is for them.

MISSION: Balloon Mini Mission
Pittsburgh isn’t known for beautiful weather. In fact, we only get about 65 sunny days a year. But the friendliness of Pittsburghers makes up for the lack of sunshine, believe me.
With today being a typically rainy, autumn day, Secret Agent L, Number Two, and Affiliated Agent D figured it was the perfect day to brighten up a part of the city.
And what better way than with bright, cheerful balloons?
Date: Thursday, October 15 2009
Time: 11:23 a.m.
Location: Construction site for the new Consol Energy Sports Arena, Fifth Avenue, Downtown Pittsburgh
Secret Agent L must admit, she and her cohorts weren’t exactly incognito, as they prepared their happy balloons in a rather–*ahem*– public place where all sorts of people could see them. But they had no choice! It was raining, and it was one of the only places to take shelter!
Much to their delight, Secret Agent L, Number Two, and Affiliated Agent D saw that someone had taken a bunch of old construction materials and made beautiful artwork on the fence next to the construction site. Yes, construction workers deserve something pretty to look at while they work hard all day!

Number Two was very adventerous in her balloon-ties. The bright pink balloon on this water main right at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Chatham Place is sure to brighten someone’s rainy day as the trudge through those puddles!

MISSION: To Hold You Over
Well, Secret Agent L had grand plans to post a rather enormous mission she and her Number Two completed over the weekend, but she realized that she forgot to load the pictures onto her flash drive. Oops.
Thus, she brings to you–to hold you over–two missions completed recently by a couple of our Affiliated Agents. Enjoy!
Date: Tuesday, 6 October 2009
Location: study carrel, Gumberg Library, Duquesne University
Time: afternoon
Affiliated Agent D (who is a man, by the way–our first male Affiliated Agent!!) states: “It’s not nearly as crafty and nice looking as some of the ones you have done, but I left it in one of the study carrels in the library yesterday afternoon.”
Secret Agent L is flattered by Affiliated Agent D’s kind remarks about her craftiness. She assures Affiliated Agent D that his work is just as fabulous. How nice that someone who has been studying hard will stumble upon that Starbucks gift card and will be able to buy a yummy treat to help get through that intellectual rigor!
Date: 18 September 2009
Location: Candy and magazine shop, Reagan National Airport (DCA), Washington, D.C.
Time: agent did not specify
Affiliated Agent L states: “The weekend of Sept 18 I was headed to a wedding in Chicago and had a little time to get together something fun for my very first mission. I went to the dollar store not far from my office and I decided that there might be some kids with frantic mom/dad headed to the airport like I was but might be in need of some $1 fun stuff for the airplane ride.
“I picked out a set of plastic farm animals and a tube of colored pencils (gender neutral so either a little gal or guy might enjoy!). I attached the calling card and a note that read ‘This is for your little one going on a big trip! Bon Voyage!’
“Had I thought through the mission a little more, I might have realized that dropping a mysterious package and slyly snapping pictures is not the best activity for the DCA Washington DC airport. But once I realized this, I was already through security with a few minutes to spare before my hopping on the plane.
“I settled on a drop spot inside the candy and magazine shop, on the shelf next to the diapers, handy wipes, sewing kits, etc where I imagined a frazzled mom or dad my go. I dropped the package snapped a couple quick picks and disappeared to Chicago!

MISSION: Donations Now Being Accepted
Hello, all!
After conducting a brief poll regarding the idea of putting a “donate” button on the Secret Agent L site, I received a resounding “YES! Do it!” from the poll participants. Thus, I have set up a Pay Pal account and have put the donate button on the right-hand side. It is my hope that people will see the value of this project and want to help, even if it’s only a dollar here and there.
Thank you for participating in the poll and for your feedback in the comments section. I really appreciate it!
Here’s to All Things Good, Generous, and Kind!
xoxo,
Secret Agent L

MISSION: Breast Cancer Awareness Bag O’ Goodies
I’ll tell you what: my agents are outstanding! Affiliated Agent A of Pittsburgh (whoop! whoop!) went above and beyond yesterday! Thank you Affiliated Agent A!
Date: Thursday, 8 October 2009
Location: Ground Floor Ladies Restroom, Cathedral of Learning, Univ. of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA
Time: 5:35 p.m.
Affiliated Agent A states: “Yesterday, I had been planning on making two missions, both including pink gift bags with soft slippers, lotion, and a pedicure set. However, a good friend of mine was having a rough day, so one of the gift bags went right to her. I was glad to have cheered up her day!
“The second mission went off without a hitch, though it was a little strange! I took the second bag of goodies to the Ground Floor Ladies Restroom at the Cathedral of Learning.
“I hung the bag on the purse hook when someone stepped into the stall next to me! That rarely happens in such large restrooms and I didn’t really have to actually use the restroom, but I thought the person would think it strange if I was just snapping pictures in a stall
October is
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
and I hope that I remind you
to regularly feel your ta-ta’s!!
While you may be
young or old,
gray or bold,
you and your ta-ta’s
deserve regular monitoring!!
Also, take these
relaxation goodies.
And spend some time
pampering yourself!”
