MISSION: Mommy Do-Over

I have so much respect for mothers.  Boy, do I ever!  I’m not a mother, so I’m not intimately involved with the day-to-day activities (and sometimes disasters) that mothers go through with their children.  I commend them.  Top honors.  High-fives.  Hugs galore.  I don’t know how they do it, but they do.  And they deserve so much recognition and praise.  (As do the Mr. Moms out there, too!)

Affiliated Agent LA from Florida decided to give a little gift to a mom who might be having an otherwise rough day–something she’s all too familiar with!

DATE:

TIME:
3:30 p.m.

Ok, I completed my first mission! I’m a mom of a toddler and I know that it’s not a matter of IF today will be stressful, but just HOW stressful will it be! It is always the days when we plan the most and are on the tightest schedule that seem to be the most hectic. I find that when I finally get a minute to sit down and take a minute to relax, something throws a wrench in my plans! That’s why I wanted to leave a Starbucks card in the baby changing station at Starbucks!

As a stay at home mom, I just want to have some sort of interaction with regular society and a simple stop for a pumpkin spice latte can give me all of the serenity that I need to keep on going! But there’s something about that little green logo that makes my little boy dirty his diaper. Sigh.

inside of card

Starbucks is not always the most baby-friendly place, and I have found myself many times without a changing station in site! In a place like Starbucks, you are just hoping that your kid doesn’t stink up the joint or start screaming, because there are plenty of people there who are studying, having business meetings, etc. I know whatever mommy is using the changing table in there is having the same stress, so hopefully this gift card can allow her to have a do-over on another day!

MISSION: Holiday Wishes

Do you know what I love?  When people are kind AND honest.  Today’s mission from Affiliated Agent B has both, and not just from the agent herself!

*high five*

DATE:
Thursday, 23 December 2010

OPERATIVE:
Affiliated Agent B

LOCATION:
in and around Shoreline, Washington

TIME:
throughout the day

I bought these three little wallets a couple years ago from a store going out of business. At the time I thought they would be good stocking stuffers but then they got misplaced in the “misc” box in my closet…….

Fast forward to this morning when I found them again and decided they would be the perfect RAKs for my pre-Christmas mission…….

I put a simple message in each, attached the SAL card and stuffed in a $5 bill then dropped them off in 3 distinct areas….. one at the local “big box” store while I was getting Christmas groceries, one in the restroom of a restaurant my husband and I went to for dinner this evening, and the third one I left inside the credit card wallet when we paid our bill — the waitress was so nice and cheerful — (I spent many years waiting tables and always appreciate a good wait person!!)

Little did Affiliated Agent B know that leaving her gift in this restroom would show us just how kind and honest some other people are!

A short time before  Affiliated Agent B sent me her mission specifics and photos, I received the following email:

Dear Secret Agent,

Happy Holidays! We just wanted to inform you that one of our very loyal guests turned in a red wallet containing $5! She turned it in and we figured we would contact the email address on the business card. Please let us know how you would like to claim the wallet and cash.

Sincerely,
(name withheld for privacy)

I was so blown away by the honesty of the two individuals involved–the one who turned in the wallet and the one who emailed me about it.  That just shows me that there truly is kindness in our world, that there are so many good, loving, and honest people out there.  What a wonderful Christmas gift her email was to me!

I responded to the writer of the email, of course, and explained how the Secret Agent L Project works and said she could keep the wallet or return it to the person who originally turned it in.

Hooray for kindness, no matter where it comes from!

MISSION: Pet Lovers Mission

I’m so sorry I didn’t get to post a mission yesterday!  I was in meetings about the Secret Agent L Project ALL DAY.  Let’s just say that I think 2011 is going to be a pretty interesting year!

Today’s mission warms my heart.  If you’ve been following the Secret Agent L Project (and, most specifically, my Twitter feed), you know that I absolutely LOVE animals, especially dogs.  I love dogs more than shoes, handbags, and chocolate.  My favorite breed?  The adorable Boston Terrier.  I joke that if I ever get engaged, I don’t want a diamond ring.  I want an Engagement Puppy.

Okay, so it’s not a joke. (*grin*)

So I especially love Affiliated Agent J’s (and her secret helper) thoughtful (and EXTREMELY generous) mission today.  Woof!  Woof!

LOCATION:
Planned Pethood Spay and Neuter Clinic
North Miami, Florida

TIME:
9 a.m.

There is a wonderful low-cost spay and neuter clinic in a very old shopping center that has been there for over 25 years. They only charge $20 – $25 for cats and $30 – $40 for dogs. When I was there, I saw many people come in who looked like they could not afford it, but I saw them bring in stray/abandoned/adopted animals, and so I decided to make this my mission, to help 10 people who needed help to pay for this service.

I was very excited as this is my first mission, and I hope it helps those less fortunate, and it’s certainly wonderful for the animals. Thanks for letting me participate!

spay and neuter clinic

I got some simple holiday cards, and then printed out an insert, included $5 and the Secret Agent card. Put a few stickers on, bundled them up, then made a special card with a donation in it for the clinic and I was on my way.

note and money

There was no way to do this totally anonymously, as the cars park right outside and the door to the clinic is on a buzzer system, so I rang the buzzer and told the lady at the front desk that I would like to leave the cards, and asked if she would help give them out. She was touched and agreed to be a Secret Agent Helper and said she would choose the people who she knew needed the extra help with the payment and give it to them.

MISSION: It’s In the Bag

Sorry I’m a little late with today’s mission post.  I wasn’t feeling very well last night (sore throat, aches, fatigue), so I thought I’d allow myself to sleep in a little today and move a bit more slowly than usual.  I think the holidays have finally caught up with me!

As promised, more holiday missions from our amazing Affiliated Agents!

TIME:

I love to make things for someone, anyone. I started making tote bags ever since I saw Green Bag Lady’s website. Although I make a lining in my bag so it’s reversible. I also make knitted hats, key FOB chains, bake and of course sew. When it’s towards the holidays, I always make tons of bags to give away. I give them to teachers, friends or families. This year I made too many and I figured this would be a perfect secret agent gift.

reusable bag

My son is in Pre-K and we have to drop and pick him up from school. The library is right next to the school so I walk and get my books and movies while I wait for his class to end. I always bring my tote with me when I go, since I always end up borrowing lots of books and it’s a perfect carrier.

inside of note

I started upstairs but as I turned around the corner, I saw a big sign that says SMILE YOU’RE ON CAMERA, so I skedaddled out of there before they start looking at me funny, all secretive. LOL! Then I went into the story room but there was a woman there with her grandson. OK, one more place, which is downstairs. NO luck there either, there was 2 librarians eating their lunch and she asked me if I needed help. (QUICK think, think, think!)

note

So I told her I was looking for a chapter book for my daughter, which I wasn’t, but I do have a daughter. LOL! She told me where they were, picked up a few and then I sat it down at the edge table and told her I needed to use the bathroom. Ahhhh, that’s where I ended with my present. I hurriedly place it on top of the paper towel rack took some pictures and flushed the toilet (just in case they’re listening). I washed my hands as well.

gift in restroom

The towel rack is right in front of the door, so when someone walks in, they will see it right away. So, I have a feeling it was one of those librarian that got the bag. Maybe I will see her sometimes walking with my bag.

gift closeup

I’m not done yet, it feels good and it just makes me happy. My daughter asked me why I’m doing this, she’s 8, and I told her that it makes me feel good and it’s fun and it will make someone’s day.

Affiliated Agent C, your bag is beautiful! If you don’t already have your own shop on Etsy, I think you should!  They’re gorgeous!  And reversible? Brilliant!  Thank you for your sharing your talent in the name of kindness!

MISSION: Christmas Treat

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with your friends and loved ones yesterday.  I certainly did!  But just because Christmas is over doesn’t mean the season is!  I’ve been getting so many lovely Christmas missions from my Affiliated Agents, and I can’t wait to continue sharing them with you over the coming week!

TIME:

I gathered up some extra stocking stuffers – Gum, Chapstick, $5 McDonald’s gift cards, etc., and put them in a cute little stocking I had from a prior project. I wrote up a note and attached it, along with the Secret Agent L business card and set off to do my drop. I wasn’t sure where to leave the little gift, but then I thought of the local hospital that I often pass by. I pulled into one of the lots, spotted a target and made my drop. I always feel great after a mission and can’t wait to do another!

Merry Christmas, World!

nativity

Merry Christmas, my friends! I just want to take a quick moment to wish all of you peace, love, and joy this day and to thank you for making me feel like every day is Christmas because of your kindness!  It’s an honor to see you extend your hearts and hands to those around you, to do it with such fervor, and to do it with such openness.  You are all truly making a difference in our world and helping it heal, one act of kindness at a time!

I hope that you have a wonderful day today with your friends and families.  And if, for some reason, you are alone on this day, know that I am thinking of you and sending you sincere love and friendship.  You are a gift.

With love and friendship,
Laura

MISSION: All Out in Arkansas

Affiliated Agent A in Fayetteville, Arkansas, is one committed agent.  This is one of the five missions she’s completed for the Secret Agent L Project since just September!  She’s an excellent example of kindness, and I’m honored to have her on my team.

It had been over two weeks since my last mission and I was ready to do another one. Armed with a greeting card, a package of sunflower seeds, a package of peanuts and my Secret Agent L card, I was ready to go.

gifts ready to go

It was a lovely morning here in Fayetteville, Arkansas this morning so I decided to take a walk on the University of Arkansas campus and leave my random act of kindness on a bench outside. At approximately 9:30 am on Friday, October 8, I took a stroll with no particular place in mind to find the perfect place for someone to find my treats. I passed a few benches but there were students sitting on them. I kept walking and soon found myself at the Fulbright Peace Fountain.

peace fountain

This was the perfect place! It was funded by 115 individuals and 18 countries, including $300,000 from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. On October 24, 1998, the fountain was dedicated to promoting peace through education in honor of former University of Arkansas President J. William Fulbright, who, as a U.S. Senator, was instrumental in developing ties between the United States and the Middle East.

Students like to sit along the rock ledge of the fountain so I left my package there. Luckily I wasn’t out during a class change time so there weren’t that many students milling about. I left my package and took a few pictures. Mission easily accomplished!

VIDEO MISSION: Mission for Men!

Alright, everyone.  It’s finally that time.  My first video mission!

I decided that I wanted my first video mission to focus on kindness for men, since so many of my Affiliated Agents are women and so many of our acts of kindness are geared towards what women would like.  Men need kindness, too!

Guys, this is for you.

I had a lot of fun making this video, and I’m looking forward to doing more missions this way.  But wow!  The stakes really go up when you try to do a mission and video record it!  Talk about nerve-wracking!

MISSION: Painting the Town Green and Pink

Teaming up with someone you love in order to complete a mission of kindness is some of the most fun you can have!  And if family and kids are involved, all the better!

Affiliated Agent R and her mini secret agent, Affiliated Agent M, got together after M’s 5th birthday to learn about the importance of giving back and being kind.  It was a super fun way to celebrate Birthday Week!

DATE:
Saturday, 18 December 2010

OPERATIVES:
Affiliated Agent R and mini Affiliated Agent M

LOCATION:
various
Flowood, Mississippi

TIME:
throughout the day

I have been a fan of the Secret Agent “L” from the very beginning. I have been meaning to complete a mission for quite some time – I found the perfect opportunity this week! My granddaughter – now known as “Secret Agent M” celebrated her 5th birthday this week. We celebrated the entire “birthday week” with parties and presents. After receiving so much – I wanted to teach her the importance of giving back to others . We spent today talking about kindness and the importance of giving back to others. We then “painted the town green and pink “ in honor of “Secret Agent L” by spreading little “happy’s” all around town.

monthly planners

My granddaughter and I spent a few hours planning our mission. I found some wonderful little monthly planners and calendars which I stocked up on. We placed the planners and calendars in gallon size baggies – we then placed some pretty pink filler inside. A Secret Agent L business card was placed in the bag – we also tied a business card on the front of the bag with green and pink ribbon.

little hands preparing gift

A note was also placed in the bag which read as follows: “This random act of kindness is just for you! YES YOU! (please take me) “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” ~ M. Twain – This random act of kindness was brought to you by Affiliated Agent’s “R” & “M” – Agent’s of Secret Agent “L” – HAVE A WONDERFUL LOVELY DAY! – Kindness…..pass it on! http://www.secretagentl.com”

note

We filled our basket with a total of 25 gifts and we were off! We left packages at Winner’s Circle Park, Flowood, Mississippi; G. Chastaine Flynt Memorial Library, Flowood, Mississippi, and Kroger Grocery Store, Flowood, Mississippi. Gifts were left on cars, picnic benches, and even on Santa’s chair at the park. Secret Agent “M” was in perfect character – tiptoeing around and being very secretive! She loved the mission and we had such a good time making memories.

We have decided to make this a tradition each year to celebrate Secret Agent M’s birthday. This also inspired me to keep some “happy’s” in my car so that I can give more often. I’m now hooked on spreading random acts of kindness!

Affiliated Agent R, thank you so much for sharing this mission with us!  And thank you most of all for teaching your granddaughter the importance (and fun) of kindness!

MISSION: Mini Superheroes of Kindness

I’m convinced that the sooner we teach our children the importance (and fun) of kindness, the sooner our world will start to heal itself.  For a preschool in Missoula, Montana, missions of kindness are now officially a part of their days there, thanks to Affiliated Agent K.

And my heart couldn’t be more full.

DATE:
Wednesday, 15 December 2010

OPERATIVES:
Mini Superheroes of Kindness and Affiliated Agent K

LOCATION:
Missoula, Montana

TIME:
during the day

I teach in a preschool – a school type of setting set with progressive methods, best practice and some ideas based in mindfulness. Of course, the children are enthused with superheroes. Whether or not you have seen a movie, Spiderman/Batman/etc. are on lots of children’s products. The problem being that most superheroes need to do good by fighting. In a school that does not allow such things (even if used for good, no guns, pushing, etc.). Our philosophy involves following children’s interests. You can see the dilemma – interest in superheroes, but doesn’t fit with what I can teach.

Upon seeing your website, I decided we would be “Superheroes of Kindness”.  A parent made 12 “capes of kindness” (with a felt heart on the back) for me and my students. (They would like masks, too, which we will make after winter break.) As part of a ‘kindness’ unit, we collected food for the local food bank. Yesterday, my students donned their capes while delivering 377 pounds of food to the food bank. They were so excited to wear their capes and be kind. Our goal (as superheroes continue to do good) is to do a random act of kindness once a week, capes and all, until the end of the school year.

children in superhero capes

I posted a picture and description on my personal Facebook page. The response was overwhelming, in comments and people who shared the link. I was contacted by friends of friends to see if they could share the idea. Former parents shared it to show pride in their former school. A co-teacher heard people talking about it at Aikido. I said our mission was to “permeate the city with compassion and gratitude”, and after one day it is working.

superhero child

Although I would love to take credit, it is you that deserves the credit. Without you, I would not have had the idea. Thank you. And I will begin personal affiliated missions next week, with or without any confirmation, and will look at what you have left as notes as an example. My daughter will probably join, too. My mission this last year has been to spread kindness, compassion and understanding, and am thrilled to have a new means to further my mission.
