Dear Laura,

I’m so very pleased to inform you that our Scrapbook Group has accomplished its Kindness Mission.

As I told you in my e-mail some weeks ago, we are a Spanish Scrapbook Club who decided, together, make a mission through Spain. We decided to make, each one of us, a handmade card and enclose a small present, as you told us in your e-mail below. Then, we decided to leave our presents early in the morning, on April the 2nd. This was really fun because we did it all around Spain! We only have contact through Facebook, WordPress or through E-mails and making it possible to organize us through the country by talking through these communities and also making a one day chat, was very exciting.

Then we took our pictures and they sent them to me and my boyfriend Rafa, who made a wonderful video.

It makes us feel so very well, to have done this all together.

Here a resume from our missions, so you can post it into your blog:

April, 13th, 2012 between 8h and 10h

Report:

We are a Spanish Scrapbook Club who knew about the wonderful idea from SECRET AGENT L, so me (secret agent 007) got in contact with secret agent L in order to know what we had to do. We got this funny e-mail in return, with the information we needed to organize our mission. It was funny how people, as we told about the idea in our wordpress blog, did react so good to it and asked to participate. So we informed them about the details and decided to make a greeting card with our scrapbook materials, ad some funny and positive messages + a little present. As we don’t know personally each other (for we have contact through Facebook, the WordPress and e-mails) we said it would be fun if we could make an appointment and leave our presents of kindness the same day. So we took April the 2nd for our mission.

Secret Agent 410 had to collect all our pictures and reports and make a small movie with it and the result is fantastic as you can see.

Here are some of our comments to the mission:

“I decided that this common project of kindness was a wonderful idea. I knew, from a relative, that there was a couple who just lost their baby, and I know what it is, because I lost my babies when I was near to give birth. It’s hard because sometimes, your closest friends and family try to cheer you up, but they can’t understand what it is like. I think, if someone who knew what it was to loose a baby would have gave me a present like that, with the correct words you needed to hear, that would have helped me a lot. For that reason, I decided to give my present to this couple, through a friend, so they wouldn’t know who I was…”

“I knew what I wanted exactly to say in my positive message, because these words are the ones who would make me happy. When I think about “happiness”, I think of butterflies, so I wanted that this message would fly to the person who would find my present…”

“The oncology plant in the hospital I spend a lot of time in is one of the saddest places I’ve ever seen. For that, I chose this place to leave my mission. I hope my present will make someone happy and make him regain hope and faith and that this person will spread this feeling of hope to family and friends. This act of kindness made a change in me. I’m no longer living in a cold and sad city, today I’m smiling. I will make soon a new mission.”

“The babysitter I leave my small kid, recently lost her father. Even working with children normally cheers you up, I can see that she has a very sad look in her eyes and decided to make my present to her.”

“Despite being this a small gesture, I felt excited through this experience, alive, I regained feelings I though forgotten. The feeling of being involved in a common project. I would like to extend this experience to other areas of my life.”

“With the current situation we are living today in Spain, I have chosen some positive personal messages. We are breathing negativity and sadness all day long, and I wanted, even if it was only for a moment, to get a smile on a face I won’t meet, to encourage this person to keep fighting and stand up in difficult moments. I attached to my card some earrings, for I don’t know if it will be found by a woman or a man. If it’s a man, this would be perfect because he could extend my present to another human being, and give it to his wife, girlfriend or mother.”

These and some more messages were collected and can be read in our scrapbook blog.

And that’s it, from the SECRET AGENT L – Spanish (Ñ) Scrapbook Connection.

Thanks so much for giving us the idea and the opportunity to make other people happy.

MLK, Jr.: “You only need a heart full of grace.”

martin luther king quote

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr., Day!

I invite you today to serve one another

in love and kindness.

To give of yourself. Your time, your talents.

To extend your hearts and hands to every person you encounter.

To honor the dream of a man who was the epitome of goodness, kindness, and community.

To make our world a place where we all take care of one another, and, as a result, find that everyone is taken care of.

Go.

Love.

You only need a heart full of grace.

Secret Agent L Needs YOU! Yes, YOU!

Alright, lovers of the Secret Agent L Project!
I need your help!

I’m working on a very special and very top-secret mission that will help the Secret Agent L Project touch even more lives, but I can’t do it without you. That’s what I love so much about our community: it really is about all of us. It functions and flourishes because we all come together.

[cue group hug]

So here’s where you come in:

I want you (yes, you!) to film your next mission.

It’s simple, and I think it’ll be a lot of fun! You can even have a friend help if you like!

Here are the specifics:

1. Please limit your final filmed mission to a maximum of 4 minutes. (Less is fine!)

2. Please upload your finished product to YouTube or Vimeo and email the link to me via the Contact button above.

3. Introduce yourself speaking directly to camera, tell me where you are from, and your reason for being a part of the SAL Project.

4. Introduce your mission idea.

5. Show the exterior and interior of the location of your mission if possible.

6. Film yourself with limited explanation of what you are doing.

7. Film from a hidden spot the person finding your mission. (This part might be tricky, so a busy location, like a bus stop or shopping center parking lot might be best, because that way you won’t have to wait around too long. Also, please give limited explanation at this point, too.)

8. Afterward, film yourself directly into the camera concisely speaking about the success of your mission, how you thought it went, and how it made you feel.

9. DO NOT do anything illegal, and if asked to stop filming while on any property, please do so and find another location to better execute your mission.

10. BE SAFE and HAVE FUN!

p.s. If you need some more help, check out this video mission I completed last December. Yours doesn’t have to be quite as long or as involved, but it might help you get an idea of how to film and complete your mission. I just used my iPhone’s video option, but even a FlipCam could work.

I would like to have your missions by
Friday, October 21, 2011, please.
That gives you a little over two weeks. Easy peasy!

I realize that we’re all very busy, but I cannot express to you how much this act of kindness will mean–not just to me, but to many others. I wish I could say more, but just trust that this request is made out of love and kindness. I will not be using ANY of this footage without your final permission, so I’ll be sure to contact you if your filmed mission is chosen to be a part of this very special project.

Thank you!
xoxo,
Laura

NAMI Walk 2011 with Team Secret Agent L

Happy National Mental Illness Awareness Week!!!

This week marks National Mental Illness Awareness Week, and I’ll be highlighting it a bit over the next couple of days.  To start us off,  I thought I’d share my weekend experience with you. As many of you know, I recently embarked upon a fundraising effort for the National Alliance on Mental Illness’s annual walk, NAMI Walks, here in Pittsburgh at the South Side Works. On Sunday, October 2nd, despite the cold, rainy weather, my team and I gathered together with thousands of others in a celebration of recovery and awareness. Combined, we probably had on close to 329 layers! (I had a puffy vest on under my t-shirt. I wasn’t taking any chances!) It was miserable outside, but in our hearts, we were warm and happy.

Here, team members Jill and Lynnetta throw up our gang sign (a heart, of course!) with me:

My Number Two, Vivian, rocks. And puts up with my silliness:

No Pittsburgh event is complete without the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Pierogies. Here they are getting ready to join in singing the National Anthem:

I’ve got so much love for my team!

We even had some Mini Superheroes of Kindness with us, capes and all!

The event wouldn’t have been the same without AWESOME t-shirts from the amazing Commonwealth Press on Pittsburgh’s South Side (right up the street from where the walk was held, actually). My contact at Commonwealth Press, Dan Rugh, is officially a superhero.  If you ever need t-shirts, I’m telling you: Commonwealth Press are your go-to peeps. I LOVE THEM.

Dan, you. are. the. man. Thanks for sponsoring us and for giving the most excellent customer service experience a secret agent could ask for. Your generosity and all-around awesomeness will never be forgotten. I’m a customer for life now, thanks to you.

Team Secret Agent L raised over $2,300 for this year’s walk, and I couldn’t be more proud of and thankful to everyone who contributed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And, of course, a big thank you to my lovely Darcey Garda from NAMI Southwestern PA. Darcey heads up the marketing and communication efforts at NAMI SWPA and has continued to be a source of inspiration, love, and friendship. I simply can’t imagine my life without her. And, goodness! Did she work her tail off (along with many others) to make this year’s walk a success! Way to go, Darcey! Love you, lady!

I also wanted to highlight just how important the NAMI Walk is, especially to our team members. I did a mini-interview during the walk with team member Kathy–who drove in with her husband ALL THE WAY FROM BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, just for the walk!  Kathy, thank you for your courage and your inspiration.

After the walk was over, the Mini Superheroes of Kindness, their mom, and I all completed a mission! It included a gift card to a very popular restaurant chain here in Western Pennsylvania called Eat n’ Park, as well as a lovely card. We left it at the South Side Works movie theatre for some rainy-day moviegoers to find. It was so much fun! The Mini Superheroes of Kindness kept asking, “Is it time to do the mission? Is it time to do the mission?” throughout the entire walk. I loved their excitement and desire to spread kindness!

All in all, it was a very wonderful day, and I went home one happy secret agent.

Video: A Small Act

By Secret Agent L  //  Video  //  8 Comments

A SMALL ACT Trailer 2010 from Jennifer Arnold on Vimeo.

I stumbled across this documentary on my new favorite Kindness Resource, and I couldn’t wait to share it with all of you.  The film hasn’t been released yet for personal purchase, but you can host a screening of it in your community.  I absolutely plan on organizing a screening at the university where I work.  And, of course, as soon as it’s available for purchase, I will be first in line.

Kindness can, does, and will change the world.  And we’ve already begun.

Love you all.

VIDEO MISSION: Mission for Men!

Alright, everyone.  It’s finally that time.  My first video mission!

I decided that I wanted my first video mission to focus on kindness for men, since so many of my Affiliated Agents are women and so many of our acts of kindness are geared towards what women would like.  Men need kindness, too!

Guys, this is for you.

DATE:
Tuesday, 21 December 2010

OPERATIVE:
Secret Agent L

LOCATION:
Charles Spiegel Men’s Clothing Store
Squirrel Hill neighborhood
Pittsburgh, PA

TIME:

With the help of my anonymous accomplice, today’s video mission (for men!) went off without a hitch. The gift? The book Stuff Every Man Should Know. Here are some photos of it. Pretty cool, huh?

I had a lot of fun making this video, and I’m looking forward to doing more missions this way.  But wow!  The stakes really go up when you try to do a mission and video record it!  Talk about nerve-wracking!

MISSION: Get to Know Your Secret Agent

By Secret Agent L  //  Video  //  2 Comments

Laura

Since some of you are new to the Secret Agent L Project, I thought the video below might be of interest to you. Back in September, I was asked to speak at PodCamp Pittsburgh. It was, without a doubt, one of the most fun speaking engagements I’ve done. (Thanks, Jennie, for suggesting that I participate!)

Grab a seat and get comfy.  I hope this video gives you a better glimpse into not only the reasons for starting the Secret Agent L Project, but also the person behind the secret agent persona: me.

Enjoy.

(p.s. Please note: I had a really fancy PowerPoint presentation for my talk, but my computer–an HP–couldn’t get hooked up correctly once I got to the venue.  Thus, I had to put my flash drive in a Mac, and the formatting got all messed up.  Which is part of the reason why there are some pretty hilarious moments during my presentation.  Ah, technology…)

Video: SAL Speaks at TEDxPittsburgh

By Secret Agent L  //  Video  //  2 Comments

Laura on TEDx Pittsburgh stage

On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in TEDxPittsburgh, an independently organized conference affiliated with the larger TEDWomen conference that was taking place in Washington, D.C.  For those of you familiar with the TED Events, you know how inspiring, amazing, and unique they are.  For those of you who are not familiar with TED Events, check out their website to learn more.  You’ll be hooked, I’m sure.

Laura speaking at Tedx Pittsburgh

The TEDWomen conference featured female powerhouses such as Hillary Clinton, Eve Ensler, and Madeleine Albright.  For the TEDxPittsburgh event, women (and men) from all over the Pittsburgh region gathered at the Andy Warhol Museum to watch the simulcast of the larger TEDWomen conference, while also seeing and hearing live performances by regional women making a difference in the world.  I was invited to be one of those performers, an invitation I was truly humbled and honored to be given.  Some of the regional performers included: the amazing and hilarious Nancy Berk; the very talented, funny, and musically inclined Midge Crickett; and Sheila Collins, the creative force behind Pittsburgh’s InterPlay.  It was an honor to share the stage with these extraordinary individuals.

Unfortunately, my entire talk wasn’t videotaped, but below you’ll find a 30-second clip–at least it’s proof that I was there!  *grin*
